Life as we know it has changed and to many, it can feel as if we've lost the control we previous held. The tough situation of a worldwide pandemic paired with uncertainty of how we can care for our families has left many black business owners burned from both ends. We face many challenges including being major providers for extended family and being discounted as capable of running a successful business.
What can be agreed upon is all businesses have been affected by the closures during the pandemic. However, Black businesses have been particularly heavy hit. In general most Black businesses have been shut out from the paycheck protection program and other coronavirus emergency funding. Alot of this can be attributed to unsupportive financial institutions and built in structural disadvantages that have historically kept Black business owners from accessing capital.
So, many businesses have had to pivot in order to make ends meet. That means restaurants offering catering and delivery, manufacturers making masks and PPE and gyms turning to digital classes instead. We turned to offereing masks and shields exclusively. There have been many incredible stories of pivoting in an uncertain world that should be applauded. Did you or a business you know go through a pivot? Let us know. Stay safe.
